What Are You? ... Chicken?

Sunday marked the 234th birthday of this great country of ours (for the record .. USA, you don't look a day over 200) and because many people were also off Monday, they have been celebrating (this comes in various 'shapes and sizes' ... Baptists eat a lot and shoot fireworks .. sometimes we skip the fireworks) since leaving work on Friday afternoon.

Well, it is time to "get back to reality" (or, in Winfred & Carolyn Allen's case .. 'get back to realty') as everyone returns to work (their 'place of employment' might be more accurate .. I doubt much work will be accomplished) today.

Although not as well known and publicized as Independence Day (kudos to our Founding Fathers .. and department stores .. for getting the word out), July 6 is National Fried Chicken Day here in the good old US of A.

Fried chicken was first introduced in the American South by Scottish immigrants .. they kilt the chickens before they cooked them.

Back in those days, slaves were often allowed to keep "yard birds" and it was common to fry chicken on special occasions throughout the African American community.

When the slaves began cooking in homes they added unusual seasonings (perhaps eleven herbs and spices?) that had not been a part of the Scottish tradition and these new seasonings .. combined with the Scottish frying technique .. resulted in what has become known as southern fried chicken.

If you have some flexibility with your work schedule and want/need to "tack on" just one more day to an already long holiday weekend .. go for it.

I can't think of a more noble reason.

National Fried Chicken Day ... "Give me liberty or give me breast!"

Okay, advertising may not be my area of expertise .. I need to think things through a little better and not just wing it.

It's Nice Being Off

The offices of First Baptist Church, Humboldt are closed today, so I was able to "sleep in" this morning .. until 7 a.m. (yes, JayBee .. there are TWO seven o'clocks in a day).

When I was young .. ♪♫ I never needed anyone ♪♫ .. I could easily sleep until noon if given the chance (evidently my lovely wife never ages .. ♪♫ and in my heart you'll always stay .. forever young ♪♫).

At 53 I rarely (if ever) sleep past 6 o'clock .. most days, it's 5:30 .. even on Saturdays and holidays.

Lately, I've been in some sort of "Dr. Pepper pattern" .. I go to bed at 10, then wake up at 2 and 4. That, like me .. is getting old, fast!

Many early risers (early to bed, early to rise), both past and present, are known for being "go-getters" (ex. Ben Franklin, who wrote that famous quote, and Ben Stallings, the drumming dentist, come to mind. Ben there .. Done that). They took/take advantage of the "extra" early morning hours and this makes them more productive.

I, on the other hand, "rise and shine" (perhaps, just rise is more accurate) to post on RevKev's blog.

Am I making a difference .. discovering electricity, like Ben F?

Am I contributing to society .. relieving pain and suffering, like Ben S?

No.

However, if I can make just one person smile .. and that is a big IF .. every day, that gives me great satisfaction.

May that be a lesson to all you over-achievers out there.

Set your goal low enough and you just might be able to hit it!

Silly Song Saturday

Today's "Silly Song" is in honor of July 4th.

Have a wonderful weekend, and don't forget to pause and pray for our soldiers and their families.

Are We There, Yet?

Today is July 1 (who needs a calendar when you have this blog at your disposal?), the 182nd day of the year (the 183rd .. if it's a leap year). This means we are at the halfway point of 2010 and there are 183 days left in the year.

When I was a kid, it seemed like Christmas would never get here. In fact, I'm pretty sure back then there had to be like 72 hours or so just between Christmas Eve and Christmas morning.

Now, that I am an adult (yes, I am an adult .. according to the dictionary) and responsible (yes, I am responsible .. according to .. my job description) for preparing and presenting Christmas music, the month of December gets here way too soon.

Time certainly does march on (ah yes .. March .. sometimes Easter comes in March .. grrrr) and if you're not careful, you can get trampled to the ground during the procession.

The cold hard facts are .. as we continue to mature (yes, I am ... okay, you got me on that one) .. it's a nice way of saying "get old" .. every day passes so quickly.

They say (I'm still uncertain who they really are???) that "time flies when you're having fun."

I'm here to tell you, it also flies with each passing year.

Of course, there is one exception.

At age 50 I had a colonoscopy and in preparation for that "glorious event" the nurse gave me an enema and said, "Now, hold this for at least five minutes."

It was like Christmas Eve, all over again .. minus the visions of sugar plums, of course.
