Relax .. It's Saturday

After a particularly long week (I believe it had eight days), I am looking forward to a day of rest. Normally that would be Sunday. However, if you are a Baptist that doesn't apply.

I've heard revival preachers often quote this little poem (they also tell the joke about the elderly woman sucking the chocolate off the peanuts in the bowl .. give it a rest .. we heard it from the last revival preacher) but it really is true:

Mary had a little lamb,
'twas given her to keep.
But then it joined a Baptist church
and died from lack of sleep

I only mention this little poem in case there is one person left in the world that hasn't heard it (also, did you know Michael Jackson died? .. I know there really hasn't been much in the news about it).

So, it's Saturday and I have no big plans.

Cheryl, however, always has a project going.

She likes to stay busy and she thinks those around her (since I'm the only one left at this old house .. that would be me) should be busy, as well.

Often she doesn't have a specific plan when the day begins but that can all change within minutes.

Last Friday she decided the pantry needed reorganizing (I believe she was getting some peas off the shelf and it looked cluttered in there). Did she move some cans around and line them up alphabetically? Did she group them by type (vegetables, fruits, etc.)?

No.

We had to go to Lowe's (this was four o'clock in the afternoon) to buy new shelving .. and it had to be installed that very day. What's that all about?

I have a theory about organized people.

They are just too lazy to look for things.

Keep Your Eye on the Ball

Today will tell the tale (or should that be 'tail' .. since we are talking about fish?) of whether or not this year's music camp needs a "red herring" (something to divert everyone's attention .. not a dried, smoked and salted fish .. though that would actually be both) on Sunday night.

At one o'clock we will do the final run-through of Sermon on the Mound and see if this "team" is really "ready to play" .. or should that be see if this "school" is "ready to swim" (fish or baseball reference? .. there are so many options my head is swimming like Dizzy Dean's)?

We certainly don't want to get caught "up the creek without a paddle" on Sunday evening at six o'clock (for what it's worth .. I hate these lame attempts at humor even more than you and I'll be glad to 'wave' goodbye .. oops, I did it again .. to the subject on Saturday).

From what I saw (and heard) yesterday morning, this is going to be even better than last year's musical, It's Cool in the Furnace .. if we don't have too many 'baked fishes" from being in the swimming pool all afternoon on Thursday.

Aw, I'm sure I'm just "all wet" (please help me .. I can't seem to stop) for even entertaining such a thought.

I'm pretty sure it's "safe" to say Sunday night is going to be a "home run" (okay, I'm back on baseball references).

Just you wait and .. "sea" (I'm going crazy here!!).

Go Fish .. Go Figure

Today is going to be another busy one.

It is day four of F.I.S.H. and the children will be doing some pretty intense rehearsing in preparation for Sunday's presentation of Sermon on the Mound.

"Miss Karen" (our musical director) and crew have done a great job with the boys and girls this week. Every worker has an assigned task such as recreation, drama, hand motions, daily devotions .. isn't that the name of a talk show host on the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN)?? .. etc.

Me?

I'm just a glorified 'go for' (also on TBN .. a character from the animated children's series, Glorified Gopher and Friends) and "figurehead" who takes the credit when it's all been said (or rather .. sung) and done.

It is a tough job, but someone has to do it.

Tonight is also the regular (PTL .. I have been lately) monthly meeting of our senior adults, the Youth of Yesterday (YYs) at 6:00 PM. This is a well organized group (they have their own officers, committees, etc.) and again .. I'm just a "figurehead."

Interestingly, our last outing was to a south Jackson restaurant to eat .. fish.

So today I get to hang out with the young and the old (kids and codgers).

I feel right at home with both.

Kev's Klip of the Week

In keeping with this week's "all fish" theme ...

F.I.S.H. (Day Two) .. Take a Deep Breath

F.I.S.H. went great yesterday.

We had a well-behaved school of sharks and stingrays (all the children were divided into two main groups) and they were alert (perhaps not upon arrival .. but we got there), responsive (I'm getting a pulse) and attentive (I'm assuming this .. since I have a slight attention deficit .. I didn't really pay attention).

All the "heavy stuff" (rehearsals, bible study, memorization relays, etc.) takes place by noon.

We could certainly use more time to practice the music (this musical has to be learned by Friday? .. who's brilliant idea was that???), but that's about as much as you can expect from a group who has been watching the clock since eleven, waiting for lunchtime to arrive.

The kids are just as bad (I was referring to the adult leaders above).

They have been sitting and singing then standing and singing then sitting and singing again all morning long. Coming "back for more" after twelve o'clock would be "cruel and unusual punishment" (much like being subjected to William Shatner's rendition of Rocketman at the 1978 Science Fiction Awards).

So, each afternoon there is some type of fun activity planned.

Yesterdays outing was to the Milan skating rink (nothing says good clean Christian fun quite like the limbo and chicken dance).

Today, we are going to the FunZone (don't say anything .. it's actually AutoZone .. there was some type of scheduling snafu so we're dropping the children off at the automotive supply store and letting them play with the AM/FM CD receivers that are on display for two and a half hours).

Tomorrow .. it's the toy department at Fred's Dollar Store.

I'll Have the F.I.S.H.

This morning at nine o'clock we kick-off our 2009 Fun In the Son Hapnin' (FISH) at FBC Humboldt.

It is a music (let's practice our scales) and activities (we are going swimming) camp for boys and girls, grades 1-6, where they will prepare a children's musical during the week (July 6-10, 9 AM to 3 PM) to perform on Sunday (July 12, 6:00 PM).

We started this "choir camp" last year with a "let's see if this thing flies" (flying FISH?) attitude and the response was good (you'll take this child off my hands for the entire day? .. hand me the forms). So, when we started a list of summer plans for '09, FISH .. came floating to the top.

This year's musical is Sermon on the Mound which uses a baseball theme (perhaps the team should be the Marlins??) to teach about the armor of God and I believe the children are going to love it (even if they don't .. that's what we're doing).

Please pray for the boys and girls who will be involved in this week's camp (the workers .. I should have asked Betty Bass and Gill Fletcher to help .. need your prayers, as well). They need to know ..

God loves them and has a wonderful porpoise for their lives.

"He shall have dominion also from sea to sea."
