Berry Good Response

The 72nd West Tennessee Strawberry Festival kicked off yesterday with a Berry Festive Afternoon in downtown Humboldt.

It was raining to beat the band (fortunately the bands won't be here until Thursday and Friday .. of course, speaking as a former band member .. you get used to the beatings), but that didn't dampen the spirits of those in attendance.

There were several "family-friendly" activities including: story telling by the Humboldt Library (we spend years trying to teach our children 'telling a story' is wrong .. forget that lesson), a climbing wall (many parents were doing this after standing in the rain for hours with their children .. the boys and girls, 'jacked up' on cotton candy, had no trouble at all scaling the wall .. I'm pretty sure most were able to bounce off the ceiling when they got home, too), pony rides, and a petting zoo (there were many light weight animals in the area .. but there was also some 'heavy petting' going on).

Starting at two o'clock, there were several children's groups .. dancers, singers and signers (sign language) on stage under the "Big Top" (a large tent that held 350 people.

At 3:30, the praise band/worship team from Chapel Hill Baptist Church rocked the house (or .. tent) with some great music.

They were followed by "The Miracles" from the Baddour Center (a community for adults with intellectual disabilities) in Senatobia, MS. What an inspiration and blessing!

Finally, at 5:30 (during the heaviest rainfall .. I really should have made one last 'pit stop' before the program started), the newly formed (for this event) Humboldt Community Choir (76 members strong) did a Gaither "style" Homecoming program .. thirteen snot-slingin' southern-fried gospel songs (there wasn't a dry eye in the house (again .. tent). In fact, by that time nothing was dry.

John Reeves spoke and played six or seven tunes on the tenor sax (the man can play!) as a part of that service, as well. God has really done some wonderful things in John's life over the past several years and he is now a full-time (I know, a relative term) pastor.

The night concluded with the choir .. and John .. singing "I'll Fly Away."

"I'll Float Way" would have been more appropriate.

"He watereth the hills from His chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works." - Psalm 104:13
