On Monday, a new choir was born at First Baptist Church, Humboldt. The SonShiners (Moonshiners, didn't seem appropriate for a church group) had their very first rehearsal in the fellowship hall at FBC at 1:30 PM and most everyone stayed awake.
We had 26 singers and two others called to say they would be there next week!
I was thrilled with the response (breathing is never a bad thing) and very pleased with the sound .. all four parts where covered (there was actually a fifth, but we'll work on that).
Choirs made up exclusively of senior adults have been around for years. However, this is my first venture in this arena (a word, normally associated with gladiator fighting .. we're praying it won't come to that).
One such group, that has received quite a bit of recognition of late, is called Young@Heart.
This is a chorus of twenty seven Massachusetts senior citizens (minimum age, 73) that was the subject of a documentary produced last year.
The interesting thing about this group is their repertoire. The don't sing the old songs. They "get down" to songs like the Bee Gees' "Stayin Alive," the Ramones' "I Want to Be Sedated," Bob Dylan's "Forever Young," and "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin.
I'm pretty sure the SonShiners won't rock and roll all night (and party every day). But, we might tap our feet a little (that's dancing for Baptists) to "Turn Your Radio On."
